PhD-Project
Misunderstandings from German colonies: The (post)colonial significance of the colonial acoustic heritage. The case of collections made by German colonial officers in the Berlin Phonogramme-Archive
This project contextualizes phonographic recordings made by German colonial officers as an essential part of the history of German colonization. It analyses the conditions of production of these sound recordings as well as the power relations that enabled their acquisition and questions their authenticity as well. The contexts of use of these recordings in the past as well as in the present and their significance in the debate on the restitution of art objects looted during the colonial period are also analysed in this PhD project.
