Master's thesis

The colonial ear: phonographic recordings from colonial contexts and their (post)colonial significance with the example of the Smend collection in the Berlin Phonographic Archives.

In this Master's thesis project, I analysed the sound recording collections made by Lieutenant Julius Smend between 1905 and 1907 in several regions of Togo. The work also gives an overview of theçhistory of the phonogrpah and its medieval and economic significance in history. It provides a critical look on the Berlin Phonogramm-Archive, the beginnings of ethnomusicology in Germany and the works did by its founding fathers.
